I've made several over the years, all were made hedge except for two that I made from ash and they were the best two shooting self bows I've shot. Only problem is that they don't last, both exploded/cracked after about 5 years.

America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards.

Rick Meyers in Ponca City has made a few. He came out and cut a few hedge trees for the bows and cedars for his arrows. He's pretty good natural shooter

I've got some white oak staves made from an old indoor basketball court, laminated on the back already, cut down into staves. Any thoughts if that would make good material?

Haven’t heard of too many made of oak. Osage Orange seems to be the wood of choice although I did see one made of black walnut that was beautiful. Can’t say how well it shot or if it stayed in one piece.

Invest or borrow a moisture tester, I would bet it's bone dry and will crack with much flex.
