I was drawn for an antlerless in the Cherokee GMA, 10 November (Marine Corps Birthday).

Having been drawn - first time ever - I'm wondering what to do to maximize my chances of success? Any advice?

No elk hunt for me but I did draw a muzzleloader hunt for Salt Plains NWR. Starts the day after Oklahoma Muzzleloader ends. Ought to be a good one. Drew a rifle tag there for the wilderness area 7 years ago and tagged a buck and doe first day.

Cherokee GMA has a lot hills all covered in various types of oak trees. If you can find a white oak that's producing acorns you're in the money. I liked the area along Hayfield Road as it's bottom/meadow land with a creek. I found a good crossing point and a good white oak about 20yrds into the tree line and set up there and took a good buck 15yrs ago. There are deer all over the place, so it'd be a good idea to take a trip out there and look around and look for an area that you like the looks of.

America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards.

Best bet is to make a couple trips out closer to fall and get familiar with the terrain and see how the animals are moving. Granted the deer's movements will change often due to it being a public area. Got drawn years back for Lexington and scouted before so I would at least know where I wanted to head when they turned us out at 5:30 in the morning. Good luck
