7x57 Mauser.

I still wish that I have mine. I shot quite a few deer with it back in Missouri. I liked it because the recoil to me was like shooting my 20ga. Longest shot I ever made with was between 200 to 275 yards on a coyote. Most of the deer were 100 yards or less. I would have liked to take an elk with but I will end never have that chance.
Here's a video about it.

If you can stand all of the negativity and trash talk on osa it looks like they come up for sale often.

OSA isn’t the same enjoyable place as it was a few years ago.

I’m a lurker can’t talk myself into joining. I don’t see you post often and when you do it’s pretty much on point. Something odd is going on with those folks.

Was it enjoyable once? I just see a lot of bitching and bragging. Dave Ramsey thread my goodness did that get off.
I’ve gotten to where I just scan for names i recognize from here. Some of them folks bless their hearts are just something else.really I don’t know why we don’t have a bigger following here. So much kinder and willing to just talk and share info/experience community.

I’ve thought more about whether OSA was ever really enjoyable, and I remember it as being that way. However, it may have just been less morons spewing nonsense. I’ve lost count of how many [email protected] I have on “ignore” over there, but it’s 29 or 30. There’s some more that need to go on the list.
I left for a while over a run in with the previous administrator over a warning point for saying “[email protected]”, and when I finally went back, I rode that guy like a rented mule. He’s dead now, but I still take shots at him when his name comes up.
Bear, I would say that you’re happy here and just lurking there I wouldn’t join up. The new owner has it set up now where you have to ”support” the board to see all the content, and I refuse to do that. I seriously doubt I’m missing much.

Guys this about my post on the 7x57 Mauser and the discussion of what you think about it. Not a rant about another forum you belong to. Please post about the OSA in another section of the forum.

7x57 is very underrated ... always has been. Part of it nowadays is all the craze with the latest and greatest. I personally own two. If you really want to shoot an elk with one, I'll loan you one of mine! Lord knows I will probably never have the chance!

I bought mine 40 years ago at a farm auction for $32.50 when I was 16. I gave my Dad the money to pay for it because I wasn't 18 yet. I had a Fajen stock put on it and scope mounts. It was one the best shooting rifles I have ever had. I had a friend reload the rounds for me with 140 gr Speer points. They sure did shoot well out of that old rifle. I never had to make an adjustment to the scope after I bore sighted it.

The management of OSA and myself (I'm a member of both) came to an agreement, that Oklahomahunter.net was a friend of OSA, not a competitor trying to steal members as some other forums that have done that have since came and gone that tried to recruit members from that forum to theirs.
We are free to mention this website on the OSA forum that we participate in. Just don't go to personal messages trying to recruit folks to join as it will be exposed and be no longer a friend.

If someone posts they are members of oklahomahunter.net or post on it as an alternative of OSA they allow it.
Most of the members on this forum are members of both.
We offer less drama and try to keep to the hunting/fishing/shooting content although we do allow political or social issues if one wants to rant/post those issues.
Perfectly acceptable.
Personally, I'd like to see our trading post for buying and selling grow among members and appreciate those that have done so.
I'm not much of a seller, much more a buyer, so I wouldn't offer much help in that forum personally.

Regarding the 7x57: I've never owned one, but on paper I can see the merits of the cartridge. I certainly wouldn't ever call into question the sanity of a fellow who chose it to take into the woods on a hunt.

I didn't watch Ron's video. However, I bet he had quite a bit of experience with this cartridge over the years.

I used to be able to listen to him for hours...the problem is that Ron likes to listen to himself for hours too. He has a ton of hunting experience, but all of his latter stuff is basically going over ballistic charts that anyone can generate. Plus, he has a tendency to go way over published pressure when he makes his charts. You're probably safe at those levels in a modern rifle with modern steel...but buying "300 whiz-bang" brass at $2/per and then junking them in three reloadings doesn't make much sense to me.

^ This is the intrinsic problem with guys who try to make a living in the outdoors communities. Eventually they have to branch out to cover areas outside their expertise to stay relevant...or they end up schilling for a living. I think Ron is the victim of the former. Everyone wants to know how the new stuff stacks up, and he doesn't have the experience with it.

There are still plenty of areas that I would gladly take Ron's opinion on however.

Regarding OSA: I'm probably one of the antagonists over there. But reading guys who regurgitate bad information constantly bugs me almost as much as hearing someone misquote the Bible. Before I know it, I have 18 dudes who are mad at me because I questioned the legitimacy of their champion that they blindly follow.

A couple days ago some guy pointed out that Massad Ayoob wasn't the guy to be getting defensive firearm selection advice from
...because he's NEVER been in a gunfight. He didn't articulate it that well, only made a joke...but boy did he hurt some feelings.

A couple days before that it was me because I questioned the authority of a dental surgeon on his ability to declare a certain type of buckshot as inadequate. I ended up just eating humble pie and tried to appease the masses...but in reality my wife has a more impressive resume than the guy who blogged the article. Turns out after 15 minutes of investigating that he is selling basic first aid (I mean "trauma") courses that you can attend for 4 or 8 hours. I saw the writing on the wall there quickly, and didn't feel like arguing with potatoes for 3 days.

So to summarize this long-winded and relatively useless post of mine: Oklahoma Hunter - good, OSA - bad. 7x57 - groovy, Ron - lame. 😄

Feel free to argue.

I had a Blaser R93 barrel in 7 Mauser for a while but ended up selling it to a guy that wanted it more than me. I’ve also had a couple rifles in 280 Rem, but I didn’t keep them around long either.

One of mine is a '93 Spanish Mauser, so I stick with light(starting) loads in it. I don't remember what I paid for it, but it wasn't much. It had the original stock, which had been 'chopped' to a sporter length and the original open sights. I killed my very first deer with it in 1975. I have since put a Fajen stock on it and scoped it. I haven't shot it in ages, but I'll never sell it. It's not worth anything, but it's priceless to me. The other one is a Ruger M77 which, IIRC, I bought off of Gunbroker. I worked up some max/near max loads for it, but it has been shot very little.

I’ve never been in the 7mm game for some reason.
I have two 7 x 57's. Not my first, but the others are gone. One I have is a Chilean Mauser that was originally sold to the Boers during the Anglo Boer War. This particular rifle was intercepted by the British and forced to be returned to Germany and Mauser. Mauser then resold it to Chile. I got it for use in my Victorian Rifleman
activities. I have never shot it. I need to.

My other current 7 x 57 is one of the Boddington's limited edition Africa Adventure Series Ruger Number 1''s. I have shot this gun but I am not happy with it. I still have not found the right scope for it. I need to keep working with it.

A very long time ago, pre digital camera and pre internet I had a very well built sporterized Remington Rolling block in 7x57. This was one the best looking sporterized RB I have ever seen. I do not know who did the work, but he was superior craftsman.

With factory ammo this RB was very accurate. With new unfired brass or once fired factory brass, accuracy continued. Second loading accuracy declined-sort of. Horizontal spread was narrow but vertical stringing occurred and brass started failing-head separations. Rhat rolling block action is very springy. I tried timing the brass and minimal sizing, primarily neck sizing, just touching the shoulder. I made a small notch on the edge of the rim and aligned this with a small punch mark at 12 o'clock on the chamber. Brass failure slowed and I was able to get accuracy again. I took both Blacktail deer and antelope with the gun.

I think the 7 x 57 is an excellent cartridge for deer and especially for hunting from blinds in OK.

I have to back up on my 7mm background. I officially have never owned one in that caliber, but I do have a 7.7 Jap brought back during WWII, that has been sporterized and rebarreled into to a .300 savage which has identical ballistics to the .308 currently in vogue.
The person doing the work did some pretty neat engraving on the stock, but by engraving standards, it's somewhat crude. I like it personally, but some snob would critique it that way.
Bought it on a whim at an auction, killed a couple of does with it and it's become a safe queen. Came with a box of 150 grain Rem soft points that still has cartridges in the box.
It has one of the original K4 Weaver scopes on it that I don't think are nitrogen filled with real wire reticles. It's kind of cloudy looking down range. It shot an inch or so group with it which was good enough for the area I was going to be hunting.
I'm sure better glass would move that group closer. Just haven't done it.

In some aspects it's 100000% better than it was 10y ago, in others, like the classifieds, it's worse by far imo. Have the mods/admin start a Boiler Room/Political sub forum here and see what happens lol, the downfall of OSA imo. No matter what anyone says, that leaks over into the other forums. Folks get to arguing/debating, form a dislike for for each other, then when they see those folks post in other areas, they follow them around and start stuff there also. It might be called OSA, but it might as well be called USSA because about 75% of new users every day are not from Oklahoma....despite my efforts lol.

I'm a fan, just for the sole fact the 6mm Rem was created from it lol.
