All the Wichita Mountains hunts strongly recommend bringing someone with you to help pack out, but the walk-in hunts there require you to apply in pairs (no individual application). The advantage to this is that it improves your odds of getting drawn since only one of the 2 members of the party need to be drawn for both of you to get to hunt.
Are you sure it requires you to apply in pairs? My wife and I applied separately just in a different order since her schedule and mine differ some in the winter. The ODWC site didn't say anything about it when applying. Maybe that's why I haven't gotten drawn? :ROFLMAO:

My apologies, I just looked and you're right, you don't have to apply in pairs for the walk-in hunt. However, since you can and it increases your odds of being drawn, I don't know why one wouldn't want to do that, on top of the fact that you'd probably need someone else's help with hauling it out anyway.

Been reading up on the group application. Of course with my overanalyzing everything, it just brings up more questions. Definitely says it increases your odds. How? It averages the preference points of the group. So, if you've got 2 guys in the group and one with 7 points and one with 9 points then your group application is 8 points. Does that mean each of the 2 guys get 8 chances to draw and if either draws then both get to hunt? OR is it just one group with 8 chances meaning that group doesn't have any better odds than another individual with 8 points? The second question seems to negate the "increases your odds" statement. If it's the first way then Dennis and DRS458 should apply as a group then have 53 chances to get drawn!

I just reread the controlled hunt document. It's the first. Ideally find someone with the same number of points. Should've asked around on here first - wife only has 4 points but we couldn't eat 2 elk in a year so best we draw separately.....if ever!

I recently found a 2020 elk backstrap package that held 4 steaks in the back of the freezer that had been vacuum packed. Had three of them this week at dinner while fixing the wife chicken or something.
She absolutely loves elk that is ground and made into chili or meatloaf or whatever as long as it's ground but would probably starve before eating an elk steak.
I don't understand that mentality, but it's her thing and I live with it willingly. Everybody has their "thing".

I applied as a solo...there was no warning or anything that said only pairs could apply.

My buddy and I will likely put in for MCAAP again and we'll put in for the bull elk draw again. My buddy said he's been putting in for the bull elk draw since it started too, never been drawn.

I started a new job in January so I'm starting over with zero vacation time, I have to accrue it through the year. I'm going to be very frugal with time off. Next year should be a different story.

Congratulations on the new job Archer22 hope it’s everything you need it to be. MCAAP would be awesome if you get drawn. Good luck!

Got mine and a buddies done a week ago. Not looking forward to the results. I’m sure it will be another disappointing draw.
Salt Plains and a couple elk hunts at Wichita refuge.
I’m not doing the walk in.

I do like the way they are drawing elk hunts this year. The first half of the drawings are only for people with 20 or more preference points them they will draw the last half with everyone else. We may have a chance this year Dennis.

I got my draws in last week. I put in for the bull elk, a few weekends at MCAAP, and one deer draw up around Fort Gibson. The one on Ft. Gibson just happens to be relatively close to my buddy's lake house so I'd have a nice place to stay if we drew out.

Although the draw is completely separate from the main controlled hunt draw, I've decided I probably won't hunt Arcadia this year, just a bit burned out on it. Need to try something new.

Didn’t you do alright out there last year?

The only problem with the way they are doing it this year is there is only one conventional hunt where they drive you in. All the rest are walk in hunts from the corrals. Then you have to quarter the animals and pack them out on your back. You can take an unarmed friend in though to help, so I only put in for that hunt and the one in Pusmataha. The odds are still astronomical to get drawn.

At Arcadia? Nah. I saw some deer, but never really had any shot opportunities. The weather wasn't right for one weekend and the deer didn't cooperate at all the next weekend.

I wasn't going to call them out, but I'm pretty sure the guys in the zone next to me one weekend were baiting. I hunted their zone for the preceding 15 years, I know about every square inch of it, and they were shooting deer on one secluded spot that deer NEVER used on that property, There's actually a well established coyote den back there and the deer avoid it. The two of them shot 4 deer in one weekend "out of the same tree" and I intentionally sat on the main trail that led from my zone to where they were shooting all the deer, I setup a trail cam, and not a single deer used that trail in 2 days. Deer can surprise you, but the more they talked, I was building a case in my mind they were full of sh** and likely using some kind of bait. (Bait is expressly prohibited)

Also, they fixed the road this spring that was washed out which accesses the main zones I hunted. I anticipate the hunting will go to pot now. The years the road was open, hunting was average but predictable. The years that road has been out the zones have been tops. Now the furthest you have to walk from the truck to the furthest point of any zone is right about 1 mile. Child's play.

Well dang man I thought for some reason you got one out there last year. It can get boring hunting the same plot year after year. Antlers are a plus but I hunt because we all enjoy the meat so much and use it in meals at least three times a week. Don’t get me wrong I want that wall hanger but spaghetti is good too. With that in mind it isn’t so bad when I hunt the same stand year after year. I know in your area hunting space is limited and understand that could get old.
If they ever get caught baiting I would sure hate to get that ticket.
