My oldest boy left for Army bootcamp yesterday. We took him to the recruiters in Laramie. He’s now in Omaha, NE and will be at Ft. Jackson, SC sometime tonight where his bootcamp is.
It’s been a long and emotional 48 hours around here for sure. Not going to know who he is without his long hair and goatee when he gets back.
The final photo before leaving.
L-R—his best friends from OKC, Momma, Garrett my son, daughter, youngest son & me.
Wife finally heard from him tonight. He said his Barricks are loud as he is going through the quarantine process. BC starts Monday for him. He’s not a happy camper right now but he’ll work through all that.
Basic is not supposed to be a pleasant experience as some of us on here has experienced
After active duty I spent two tours in the Army reserves as a DI. We trained recruits at Ft Sill and Ft Leonard wood Missouri during summer camps.
We had to go through a lot of training before getting that Smokey bear hat.
Had to learn when you were driving too hard and recognize those you can’t break.
It’s a tough job with 80 hour weeks common, but the desire to train them to survive whatever they may face in the future made those long days ok.
That was what the job was all about.
I had a couple of noise complaints about my barracks at Ft. Jackson in '78. Seems like someone was always yelling and beating on galvanized trash cans early in the mornings. Sure made it hard to sleep in till brunch time.
It will be good for him for sure. I like that life 360 app as now I know where he is staying on base, well at least for the last week anyway. Google earthed it and checked the area out as well.
Surprised he still has a cell and can use it.
Some bases lock down cell signals with scramblers.
Friends son is stationed at Norfolk navy base. His cell is useless until he gets a little way off base.
They were allowed to keep cell phones while in quarantine. On Sunday days they are allowed to make calls home. By allowing them to keep them the Army saves money on long distance phone calls I’m assuming.
We got to make collect calls from a small bank of pay phones after three weeks. 5-6 phones for an entire company. You didn’t talk long.
