Hunt plan for 2023-new hunter

You may recall me whining recently about having to go on a cruise with Wife (Gramma) and two teenage Grand-daughters. Don't tell them but I had a good time.

One of the many things we talked about was my hunting activities. One was not interested, the other, I'll call her M, expressed interest. M is 14.

Last week when my son was in town I talked with him about taking M hunting with me. He told me that it is something she had shown an interest in, but they had not found time to go. We formulated a plan.

First I sent M an email asking if she really wanted to go hunting. I got a quick response, "Yes!"

So the next step was to get parental permission and set a date. I knew already that it was okay with her dad, but what about Mom. (Dad have given me the okay, but she needed to get the okay from him, herself. ) I sent her the season dates for Youth deer gun, general deer gun and Antlerless deer gun.

I heard back from her and she opted for deer gun Thanksgiving week. She didn't say anything about talking to her Mom and Dad. I will be sending her an email later this morning and will address this.

When my Son and I talked about his, he asked about hunter safety certificate. I had checked and apparently in OK as long as I am in the blind with her and physically able to control the gun, she does not need hunter safety. My Son and I both agree no harm can come from her taking a hunter safety course. We are going to make it a Family requirement that she take a hunter safety course. It looks like for OK she can take this on line.

When my late wife passed, I took all her guns to my son, for use of his daughters, my grand-daughters. I had cut all these guns down to fit my late wife and her smaller dimensions. The late wife's "deer rifle" is a new model Winchester Model 70 in .243. I will send my son some snap caps for dry firing,

When M comes to hunt she will use my new Okie Wife's Winchester Model 70 in 7mm-08 for hunting. It is also cut down for Okie wife's smaller stature.

I am blessed to have (have had) these two wonderful women in my life and it is fortunate that both picked Model 70's for hunting. I feel blessed that they will have a part in passing our hunting heritage on to this young woman

So thus starts the plan.

I’m not a grandparent yet, but from what I experienced with my own grandparents and my parents and my in-laws to my kids, you’re going way overboard on the whole permission from Dad thing. Grandparents are supposed to be above “parental law”. I treat my niece and nephew like I’m a grandparent and get them into stuff just to piss off my brother, and THAT’S why I’m the favorite uncle (according to the kids, not my brother).:ROFLMAO:

I think getting young ladies into hunting is great, because life isn’t all about frilly dresses. In my opinion, it needs to be her idea and not forced, and it sounds like M is ready. My daughter crossed that line when she was 10, and it was a surprise to the whole family.
My advice is to set M up for success as best you can and make it a fun experience, and even if she doesn’t see a deer, let her shoot a SOMETHING. I’ve found that initial success is the key to them wanting to go again and again.

@TheDoubleD and @baby Y’all are great grandpas, and I hope to be the same to my grandkids someday.

Edit to add shameless glamour shots of my daughter.

My two grandsons like to go turkey now since they both have shot their first turkey.
Last season was the first time they actually got to hunt. Before that I would take them out with me but I was the only allowed to be hunt. After I got them their Hunter Apprenticeship Card I decided that it time for them to try their hand in trying to get a turkey. When it's their hunt I'm the one who carries and loads the firearm until it is time for them to shoot.
The boys now are asking when they can go again. I tell them they have to wait until next April and they starting to make plans to go all ready.
Their parents don't hunt but it's Papa who gets these two out. When I do take them it reminds me of how my father would do the same thing with me when I was their age. I'm always going to remember these outdoor adventures with my grandsons and I hope they will pass them on when they get older

There’s a whole lot more for those boys to hunt in Oklahoma besides turkeys. You need to get them on a couple deer now that you have the hook set.
How far are you from Drummond Flats?
My youngest son and a friend have hunted it quite a bit, and there’s a lot there to hunt for free.

I'm gradually getting to deer hunting. Next is waterfowl. I'm starting them with smaller game until they can get the fundamentals of shooting down. My father started me out that way. I'm glad he did. Teaching them this way will help them with their shooting skills. I'm teaching them to shoot smaller caliber firearms first and working them up to larger caliber firearms to help them adjust to the recoil as they progress. I have started out with a 20ga auto which they are starting to handle well. I am trying to teach them best I know how to understand hunter safety and respect for a firearms. I hope as they get older that they will carry on the heritage of hunting and fishing like my father did with me.
Drummond Flats is about 120 miles north of where I live.

Good for you guys getting those kids into the field. I came from a liberal family that hated guns and never hunted, only fished.
What gave me the gun bug I don't know, but that bug bit me deep.
My sons were 4 years apart. Oldest son got to go first, with the younger going when he got old enough. They both got massive amounts of gun safety training.
Oldest son would go anytime he was asked in a heartbeat, while the youngest son never really got interested in hunting. He went with me several times, and watched deer being gutted, and cleaning of small game, eating everything put on his plate game wise, but just never wanted to hunt. Still loves wild game and I keep his freezer full.
Unfortunately the grand kids live in Lewisville Tx, and are city kids. They have zero interest in hunting or guns, so I get to enjoy watching you guys tell the stories and post pics. Love it!

That’s a great plan. Nothing worse than having a new shooter get a bad case of the the YIPS from too much recoil at an early age. It’s fixable but dang it takes a long time.

I've got a single shot .410 if you'd like to borrow it. Probably not if already shooting a 20 ga auto but wanted to toss it out there. Great for learning since single shot with a hammer.

Well now is the perfect time to take her to town and buy her a 2024 GMC Denali 4 door.

Her mom and dad are in a much better position to do that. She did express preference for an F150. She ain't old enough to be vehicle biased yet , is she?

I have looked into renting a travel trailer to put down on the deer lease this coming season--Choke. That ain't cheap.

Don't rely want to buy one, but may have to to.

There are plenty of used RV's out there right now. Lots of covid buyers that didn't get into that lifestyle have them for sale now. What's the problem is that the used prices are almost as high as new units if they aren't very old. Just like used cars.

My Father in Law‘s health has gotten pretty bad, and he’s actually in the hospital in ICU right now. They’re trying to sell a relatively new bumper pull camper. @TheDoubleD if you want details and pictures, let me know.

My wife was 3 months pregnant with our first when my dad passed away. That was honestly the hardest thing about his passing was knowing how bad he wanted to see his first grandkid and he and I both knowing that he wasn't going to get to. I started trapping, and hunting with my dad when I was old enough to keep up with him, fishing came later around 5 or 6yo. Dad had fear of me around the water he said lol. I did the same with my daughter, started early with her. Trapping when she could keep up, turkey at 7 with a 20g with a red dot as well as waterfowl, deer with a crossbow at 8, muzzleloader with half powder charge and the corn pile close at 10yo. That's also the age she started shooting competitive trap, she loved/loves to shoot. She wasn't even really interested in rifle hunting until almost a teenager. Wouldn't trade those times for anything. Jr High, sports, High school, more sports, work and college and poof they're gone. She still hunts when there's time, just nothing like before of course. My son started early as well, he didn't get on fire for it like my daughter did. He likes doves, turkey, and waterfowl more than deer. Even at 15yo, the thought of sitting for two or three hours in the cold holding relatively still isn't high on his list lol. He had his compound bow dialed in all last summer waiting for season to start. Football started, life got busy and he never bow hunted once, just dove and waterfowl. I'm happy with whatever interests him as long as we go.

Kind of amazing how one kid in a family goes in full bore for the shooting sports and hunting, while the other had no interest even though both had the same opportunities.

That’s the way it is with my kids. My youngest son is an avid hunter and fisherman, my daughter likes to deer hunt, and my oldest son doesn’t care about hunting or fishing. 🤷‍♂️
