A friends co-worker shot it. I've been up in that area and seen hog sign, but the deer hunters keep them thinned out pretty good.

theres a boat load of hogs on kaw lake.
the biggest ones are around 5 fingers.horse trails 17 mile trail no camping.there was a 400 pounder killed there this fall.
group of 47 just north of traders bend .
newkirk bridge east side two small ponds hogs there.
for u Kansas boys Cowley county has had over 500 killd by the usda past year.
the usda has hog traps year round on kaw wildlife but no hunting of wild hogs.
they think they can control them for the next 10 years then it will be open to the hunters.LOL.
warden green says there a big group in some caves on kaw.
anyone know of the caves ?

First of all, welcome to Oklahoma Hunter! I live just a little southwest of Kaw lake.
I've heard rumors of helicoptor flyovers on hogs at Kaw as well. Next time I see the GW, I'll see if they have done it on the Okla side.
I get up in that area quite a bit fishing. I took a guy up to the traders bend area in December, as he was wanting to hunt deer on the holiday hunts, and had never been to Kaw.
We ran across two hog traps, but it appeared neither had been used in quite awhile. Don't know if they were owned by the state or privately owned. We saw some old wallers, but nothing fresh. The deer hunters may have thinned them out, but it won't take long for them to repopulate. ;)

Boat is the way to get into the horse trail on 5 fingers. Now would be a good time with all the leaves down and better visibility.

Off topic................but there are just absolute "hogs" of gar in five fingers in July. Zero wind day, no clouds, 100+ degrees= some excellent giant gar bowfishing.

Your correct. Its amazing how many gather there. FYI, the 4' gar were in the area I was fishing at sooner. The shad were in and the gar followed.

i went up to Kaw looking for hogs last Feb. I saw lots of sign, but no pigs. Game warden had told me several were located just north of Traders Bend on the west side of the river. A buddy and I are thinking about making a trip back up there next weekend and probably focus on the same area. Anyone have any suggestions?

thanks.

First of all, welcome to the forum!
We have a couple of guys that have been hunting pigs on Kaw.
I've been up there a couple of times myself. I've seen signs, but never any pigs. Where they hang out around traders bend is some pretty rough terrain, but the GW tells me that's where they are.
I'd almost think a group of hunters making a drive pushing them out of there to standers, like a deer drive would be successful.

Thanks for the response. I'd love nothing more than to go stomping off into the brush behind them. I've jumped some 150lb+ porkers at 15 yrds. It's such an adrenaline rush!

I shot a boar about #450 at 15' that way. When he jumped I tho it it was a buffalo running through the sagebrush at first. Been way too close to many times to some big pigs. Started carrying a .44 as backup for such close range.

I've got a Colt SAA replica in .357mag that I have become rather competent with for my sidearm. I had a Ruger Blackhawk in .44mag on my wish list but built an AR instead. I've dreamt of just taking my handgun pig hunting, but I would rather trust my .30-30 to do that job and keep the handgun in the holster.
