Other than hunting and fishing, what hobbies do you participate in?

I like riding atv’s, doing light machining on the lathes, welding and recently got into metal detecting and lapidary work.
While in Arizona over the winter I built stone handles for 6 steak knives and a chef’s knife from rocks. The blanks were bought at Woodcrafters.
Here is how it starts. Slabs are cut from raw rock. The pattern traced and cut to rough shape with a tile saw and glued to the knife.
Then on to the polishing wheels that go from coarse 30 grit for stock removal to the final polish with 50,000 grit

Wood Rectangle Line Metal Hardwood

Started into metal detecting recently as well.
First serious hunt was in the back yard yesterday. Found what most would expect around a home. Screws, coins, nails, etc.
Can’t wait to prospect around some old homesteads.

I hate to admit it but really don't have any hobbies per se other than hunting and fishing. When I lived in CO, hiking was a big part of our weekends as was camping but not so much here. We do have a boat so try to get on one of the beautiful OK lakes a few times each year but pricing for lodging has gotten crazy especially if there's easy access for Texans(Beaver's Bend, Arbuckle, Murray). Likely will start trying some of the lakes around Tulsa. I think Tenkiller is probably the most scenic but 3 hours or so each way pulling a boat ends up needing a 3 day weekend. Eufaula is probably our least favorite.

We do like to travel so plan a big trip(2 weeks) every other year. May go more often these next couple of years since we're taking my Mom while she still has the desire. Short trip planned to Niagara Falls likely in April then hope to visit Portugal in the fall for 12-14 days.
What is it you don’t like about Eufaula?

Shop out that way sold shirts that said lake Eufaula where the women are the only thing dirtier than the water. You don’t want to wear white that’s for sure. I’ve never experienced the variations in depth but you aren’t the first person I’ve heard say that. Took my brother and nephew out to Gibson one time in the pontoon, I said what is that up there, looked at the depth finder we are in pretty deep water got closer to what I was looking at it was a bird standing in the middle of the lake. Look at the depth finder again we are in three foot.

Got lucky on that one. It’s about time to start pulling the boats out and getting things ready!

Well may get me shunned from the group but here goes, you asked and I keep no secrets as I am only judged by one. Besides hunting I like to hunt Indian and prehistoric artifacts, brew beer and grow and breed cannabis. Let the criticism begin!
Looking for artifacts is awesome I went down a rabbit hole on YouTube watching folks along the Arkansas river looking for arrowheads, been a lot of crazy things found and the history channel even did a show over Turkey mountain in Tulsa and Vikings sparked by two guys finding some old skull in the river if I recall correctly. Growing anything is enjoyable.

We have found thousands of points, many bison skulls, prehistoric horse and Mammoth teeth and an 8 foot Mammoth tusk that came out of the bank of Cooper creek along with some petrified tortoise shell some of which is nearly 2 inches thick.
Your going to have to share photos of these things

Bear, my buddy found this along the N Canadian in Okfuskee County. He had it aged and I believe in the 5,000 year old range IIRC. View attachment 10255
Now this is awesome! That would be so cool to come across. Some guy was walking down the Arkansas river and found a skull with a point of some kind in its head still and it turned into a big deal if I’m remembering correctly changed the time when they thought humans here were adapting tools for hunting or something. I think the skull went to several universities and might be in Norman now. Could probably Google it and get the du story I’m sure that I’m not remembering exactly
To think that thing has been sitting there for 5k years and now all of a sudden you are finding it touching it moving it that is just, it blows my mind. So cool

Freaking awesome! It’s been there 5k years I don’t know if it needs preservatives ha. Really though that is so cool what an awesome piece to have in your home. Not to sound like a nerd but someone needs to start a thread where we can post the things we find like this. Sounds like smith676 could show some stuff and now with Dennis doing some metal detecting it could be really cool. Somewhere to post just any crazy thing we find
Looks like I’ll do my evening reading on the calf creek period. Thanks for sharing this Wishbone.

I’ve only ever found one point. It was on the Illinois river I looked down and there it was plain as day and no mistaking what it was I thought it was the coolest thing. Not long after I found it I checked my pocket and somewhere between swimming and acting silly it came out of my pocket.

Dang that is so cool. Wouldn’t that be awesome to have in your home with a display light above it maybe some literature over the calf creek culture.

May take on it is who cares. Cannabis has been here since before the constitution, doesn’t mean I like seeing it on every billboard but hey there are a lot of things I don’t like and nobody cares ha

Pretty good deer hunting there?
I go after yotes starting about Thanksgiving.

Mid December I'm hammering beavers till the end of March and February I go after an otter we're only allowed one.

Around December 17 I pursue Bobcats and we're only allowed one of them.
Just after Xmas we have a cable restraint season so I go after the yotes with them.

And about December 17 we have a fisher season.

The second and third week of November I deer hunt in Maine and do some trapping to.
