Sport’s card collectors?

So when I was probably 6 or 7 I remember my dad sitting down with my brothers and me and giving us each a basketball card of an nba player with our name. My name is BJ so he handed me a card of BJ Armstrong from the Chicago Bulls. Clearly not the Bull I care about these days but I just remember that evening at home 30 years ago (yikes) and it stirred up a passion for card collecting.
It was the 90’s and I was in Oregon. Our team was the Portland Trailblazers and I was naturally a huge Clyde Drexler fan. Clyde the Glide! Jerome Jersey, Clifford Robinson, buck williams, etc. Not too far away was another team I liked, the Seattle SuperSonics and that was prime Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton days.
But as a young kid my true idol in the nba was Michael Jordan. Man, I would spend every extra dollar I earned on packs of basketball cards hoping I would pull a Jordan. Thousands of basketball cards that I kept in binders and boxes for decades until finally I had my own boys who got interested in sports cards. Well, I got to pull out those old cards and I gotta say it was a bit nostalgic because I could still remember that smell of a pack when you first opened it.
Well since that time with my boys I sort got back into the collecting game but now more as what I would call an investing collector. I sort of went through and weeded out all the cards that were in bad shape and kept all the good condition ones. And for the first time I actually sent cards of to PSA to be graded. Ideally you want a Gem Mint 10 which means it’s perfect. I had a 1996 card of Michael Jordan that I remember opening as a kid and it came back a grade 9. Now that’s not terrible considering how it was stored for 25 years.
So with all that to say, I’m a fan of firearms and collect there. But I am also a fan of sports cards and have many cool cards that I’ve purchased graded and sent in to be graded and now I have a decent, high value collection of cards mainly of Jordan but also Ken Griffey Jr., Scottie Pippen, Cal Ripken Jr., and others.

Are there any other sport’s card or sport’s memorabilia collectors here? If no one replies I’ll know not to talk sports stuff here 😂😂😂
Below is an example of a graded card of a Frank Thomas autographed rookie card I have and then the second picture is a graded card hard case I have all my graded cards in.

I have a very sad story about sports collectors' cards, especially baseball cards.
Back in my youth, TOPS was the card of choice and you got some bubble gum as a bonus. I had ****** Ford, Babe Ruth, Rodger Maris, and a couple Micky Mantle rookie cards as well as his later cards.
Used some of the lesser known cards along with a clothes pin to put a card on the spokes of the bicycle.
Fast forward to a 4+ year stint in the Army, getting married, having kids, and making my own life, Mom called one day and said her and dad were going to remodel my old bedroom.
Asked if I wanted my old baseball cards, (there was a shoebox full) along with model ships, and model airplanes that I'd built over my youth. (should have saved that USS Constitution ship. Had many hours in it building the rigging thread by thread)
Nope! don't need them, don't have room for them and who keeps baseball card now?
Fast forward more years, my youngest son became interested in sports card collecting. One fall we took the kids to Kansas City to attend a KC Chiefs football game. Stayed at the Holiday Inn across the street from the parking lot of the stadium.
Just happened to be a sports card collector convention going on at that time in the hotel conference room.
When I saw what the cards I had were worth, just about passed out. The Micky Mantle rookie card was worth many thousands of dollars.
There was the original Honus Wagner on display with a couple of burly armed guards watching over it.
Wrote it off as a bad decision to get rid of them, and moved on.
Later, my youngest son became a collector. He's pretty much a sports nut. Anything OU. Big collection of signed memorabilia.
FIL passed away a few years ago, and unbeknownst to me, was also a card collector. He bought the TOPS and other collections off the internet, that really didn't have any collectors value but did have some in plastic that were bought from some store that had prices on them.
I gave them all to my son.

Yeah man, I’ve heard so many stories of guys with the Michael Jordan rookie placed on their spokes. And even if you had a horrible condition one it’s still worth over $1k. I bet that was gut wrenching to see your exact same cards with massive price tags on them. That Honus Wagner sold a couple years back for $6M 😳😳😳.
I figured if the prices skyrocket I’ll sell them and take the profits. If not, I’ll pass them down to my boys.
I will say this. I have a 1989 Fleer Michael Jordan PSA 10 that I bought a long time ago for $400 and it’s consistently selling on eBay for $1,200+. Not to sound crass but MJ will likely pass away during my lifetime and when that happens all of his stuff will jump in price sort of like when Kobe Bryant died in 2020.

Card collecting and their prices seem to vary across generations from my little exposure to watching the prices.
A Mickey Mantle rookie card in 2023 isn't worth as much as when it was during the card craze in the late 90's and early 2000.
I don't get much into looking at prices but when FIL passed away, we were looking at everything to see if it could be sold or auctioned.
I looked and noticed a difference.

I have a bunch of old baseball cards still. I’d be interested to one day sit down and go through them to find if any have a value to them.

If you ever want an honest look at them let me know and I’d be happy to go through them. There are some really common cards of big name guys that aren’t worth a ton but then are some that are inserts that are more rare and worth a bunch. And obviously condition is important. I’m not gonna lie, I love sports cards 😬

Well I’m in Wyoming so that’s a long trip. I’d say all my cards are from the late 80’s to mid 90’s.

I lived in OKC for 10 years while in the Navy & Chair Force, but after retiring in 2018 we packed up and moved on up here to WY in June of 2019. In fact, June 15th will be 4 years here for us.
So far Dennis is the only Okie to pay us a visit aside from our daughter who still lives in OKC.

Well that’s pretty cool and let me say thank you for your service. Having just put down roots here it’s encouraging to be able to chit chat about not just hunting but every day stuff with you local guys, and formerly local guys. My niece was just born a week and a half ago here making her the first born okie.

I have that Frank Thomas card as well, although not autographed. I think I have 9 Randy Johnson rookie cards...got to see him pitch for the M's back in '98.

Was HUGE into sports cards and memorabilia when I was young. When I bought my first rifle at 14, all of that changed... (as if you couldn't tell by my posts).

Still have a few Mickey Mantle items and cards. He was my favorite HOF'mer when I was a kid. Most of my heroes of the day got outed with the PED steroids busts of 15 or so years ago.

My brother and I collected baseball cards from the mid 80s to the early 90s. Somewhere, I believe his attic we have shoe boxes full of cards. Every brand made. I know there is some complete season collections from upper deck that we never opened. Dont remember whT years those are. Want to say 88 or 89. Have to get those out some day.
