Squirrel hunting

I took my son with me the other day to try squirrel hunting. He didn't actually get to cary a gun but I wanted a picture of both of us with our guns.
We didn't see a single squirrel that afternoon because it was too windy and early (not to mention little kids don't walk very quiet. 😁) but we had a lot of fun wandering around 1500+ acres of woods.

Did they raise the bag and possession limit? I was checking the season dates and I didn't remember the limits being that high.

If they did raise the limit It's probably because so few hunt squirrels.

Need to learn and bow hunt them with a long bow or recurve. May come in handy one day.

.22 shorts fired through a suppressor are quieter than a bow, but I understand where your coming from.

If hard times come I may have to learn bow hunting but until I can learn I will eat the neighbors pets. All I need is a knife. Here fido.... Slice..... 🤣

Well it's pretty down at Elsworth in the rain but it sure isn't helping me get any squirrels this opening day of squirrel season.

I was turkey hunting out there and the ticks were out. Better have some good insect repellent well you're looking for those tree rats.

Supposed to be nice sunny weather the next couple of days, so you should get into some. Good Luck!

Sadly my week after today is going to be totally crazy with work. I worked the last 7 days and only took part of today off but didn't see any squirrels and got rained out. I ended up taking my kids fishing this afternoon.

Where at Ellsworth are you hunting them?

Towards the end of the season last year I tried a spot on the east shore but today I was planning on hunting the west shore by Edgewater park if we hadn't got rained out. Instead I took my wife and kids and brother in law fishing on the bridge between Edgewater and Porter hill. It was fun even though we didn't catch anything. We plan to do it again but next time we are going to try to get carp.

Interesting you are targeting carp on your next trip. Just fishing for fun or do you eat them?
My grandpa used to take me to the river where the sanitation plant dumped the water after cleaning into the river. It was a hot bed for carp. He used wheaty's cereal and vanilla to make dough balls. We had fun catching them, but were returned to the river. Never ate one personally.

We plan to eat them. We aren't picky and it's harder to catch the other fish because they are so heavily fished. We also want to try red slider turtles. I haven't decided between BBQ turtle or turtle soup.

I've had snapping turtle. It's pretty good.
Let us know how the sliders are. We have plenty around here.

How was the snapping turtle prepared?

It was deep fried in chunks.
What was really cool about eating turtle, was that my Aunt and Uncle always put on these goat roping parties as they called them.
We would get a couple of goats from the Arrowhead Ranch, kill, butcher, and smoke them in an interesting smoker that preceded the water smokers we have now that was home built.
Ol' Bill Edwards, now deceased, would trap snappers in farm ponds and butcher them. When the ladies or girly men said they wouldn't eat goat, he would offer them some "red snapper" from the gulf.
They ate the heck out of it.
