This is what I did today.

Just a thread to post in what happened today.
I'll start.
Some of our RV friends that we have been travelling with for the last 7 years came up I-35 yesterday and stopped at the Tonkawa Casino RV park so we could get a visit.
It's been two years since camping with them in Colorado.
We met at the restaurant at the casino last night and they came to our home today.
We cooked up a nice meal, and visited for a couple of hours.
They live in Mercedes Tx, two miles from the Mexican border and are traveling to Canada for a wedding. Wife's nephew is getting married. Our friend's wife has dual citizenship. Canadian born, American citizen.

They are headed to Alberta Canada which as we all know Canada does not allow certain firearms in their country.
There are places that allow lockers to rent along the border on the US side where US citizens entering into Canada can put their guns and retrieve them later when exiting that country for a fee, which can be steep.
Just so happens, our friends destination does not have that locker access, so they called the North Dakota Sheriffs office to see if there was an alternative.
The Sheriff's office said they would store them in their evidence locker after taking pics and recording SN's.
They could retrieve them when exiting Canada. How cool is that?
He was kind of torn on this with the bad publicity about AR's in the recent mass shootings, so decided to leave them at home and just take a shotgun and pistols.

What did you do today?

You did well! Those bluegill are fantastic eating. I've always scaled them and fried with the skin on.
Be sure and trim all that red meat off the catfish fillet's or they will taste fishy. That turns a lot of people off of eating fish.

I caught a California pike when I was about 5 and a small catfish when I was around 14 and I went fishing many times before about 17 when I decided fishing wasn't for me because I never caught anything. Lately I have been getting discouraged squirrel hunting because I haven't seen any squirrels so I decided to take my kids fishing instead and I am glad I did!

My youngest son and daughter in law just stopped by our house on their way out of town to let us know we’re going to be grandparents. My wife is SUPER EXCITED and already brainstorming for what her grandma name can be.

I don’t get too excited about kids until they’re old enough to do something with me like hunting or fishing.

Nice! What kinda of rub do you use? That bark looks like it’s sweet. I did one not long ago that was just salt, pepper, and garlic with a mustard binder. Turned out great but I think a little sweet would have been nice

I’m too cheap to pay for a pre-made rub, so I use garlic salt, black pepper, and brown sugar liberally which seem to be the main ingredients in the ones I’ve seen for sale. I’ve done a couple with just garlic salt and pepper, but my wife really likes the sweet from the brown sugar. I usually use dark brown, but all I had was light brown this time.
I always thought smoking meat was kind of like rocket science from listening to how some guys talk about it, but after getting my first smoker for Christmas, I discovered really quick that it’s as hard as you want to make it. So far, I’ve smoked briskets, roasts, steaks, pork chops, and wild turkey breasts, and it’s all turned out really good. The turkey breast was my favorite, and my wife has already asked if I can kill another turkey in the fall.

Nice! I agree about the difficulty of smoking. It’s just low and slow. I just did my best brisket yet and it was about 13 hours. Slow smoke on low heat to about 165. Then wrap in bust her paper or aluminum. Increase temp to about 225 and pull when inner temp is about 215-220. Then let rest in wrapping and towel in a cooler for two hours.

Congrats on becoming a grandpa! Feed em sugary candy and send them home when they get old enough, and a drum set when they get a little older. 😂

My favorite marinade for brisket is a cup of soy sauce, a cup of Teriyaki sauce, and a 1/4 cup of Worcestershire sauce.
Add a tablespoon of garlic powder and a tablespoon of onion powder.
Reserve 1/4th of the marinade for basting.
Marinade overnight.
Put on the smoker the next day and cook at 225 for 10-11 hours uncovered.
It will be fork tender with a great bark.
We won 5th in the Oklahoma State BBQ championship with that marinade the first time we entered any cooking competition.

All that being said, we were at Costco a while back. They had USDA choice chuck roasts on sale that were 2.5” thick. Huge piece of meat.
Quartered it up and cooked it just like the brisket at 225 for 4 hours, and 250 for another hour.
We like it better than Brisket.

Well I went to church with the grandkids and came home to find no else here. My wife and the kid's parents went to Sam. Then to Home Depot to buy a early Father's Day present for me. I turned out to be a new weedeater. My old one bit the dust. So I caught up on some weedeating that needed to be done. I will finish the rest tomorrow. I would have rather have gotten a case of steelshot for the 20ga but I guess they thought the weedeater was a better gift.

Congratulations. Tell the wife that being called Grandma will just fine. My grandkids call me Papa because it was easier to say than Grandpa. So it stuck.

I woke up with a Yellow belly headache. Spent 2 hours at the dentist getting 3 fillings replaced. Then replaced the starter unit on my new/ used generator. That required me to break part of the motor down to do it. It functions like it should now. Wife and I went and took a 2nd look at a house we’re looking to buy. Met the owner (currently a rental) and pointed out a few things I found wrong. He lost his mind as to some modifications they did without his knowledge. So looks like some renovating will be done before anything is offered.

Went in and tested for my hazmat endorsement. Passed and only missed a few question that I didn’t really recognize from studying. Now just have to get set up with my company’s electronic logs and then my boss has to ride with me like five times to sign off on my driving. But super glad all this testing crap is out of the way
