We have corner in the yard where were seeds blow in from the neighborhood and grow. Usually cotton wood or weeds.

I saw this little tree pop up last fall. During the winter when everything was dormant, I dug it up and planted it in the yard. It seem to me to be nothing more than death sentence as we had great difficulty getting trees to grow in our yard, and that was before the drought. We lost a ball willow and all my gapes this year.

Well this tree seems to a contrarian, where other plants die, this one thrived.

Does anyone know what this is?

It’s a silver maple according to my plant ID app.
They are very shallow rooted with most roots right at ground level.
Grass won’t grow under them as they put out a natural herbicide to kill anything so there is no competition for food the tree needs.
I had two of them in my yard years ago. Spent a ton of money trying to get grass to grow under them with zero success so I finally read up why.
