Mine is the 308 Win.
It has been thru more test then most calibers...Due to being a military caliber.
You can find ammo for it at any mom & pop's shop across the usa.
Recoil is faint,Ammo is not to expensive.
Last,It will cleanly kill any north american game animal.

I gotta go with the 300 win mag. Ammo can be pricey but is easy to find. I like the extended range and power. The extra energy makes me more comfortable when shot angles are less than perfect.

The extra bonus, NO BLOOD TRAILING! ;D DRT
I miss my 2... 300's, a Weatherby & Winchester.

I'm kind of partial to the 270. Recoil is nice and with different loads it's good for prarie dogs to elk. That covers anything I'm likely to shoot at.

I like the ol' 30-06, Tried and true! Like the .308, a old military round that can be found just about everywhere and a wide varity of rounds. Recoil is acceptable an easy to bring back on target. I reach for my Weatherby 30-06 before anything else. ;D
I can't really say I have one overall favorite. ??? I have favorites for each specie of game. .22 for bullfrogs, and turtles. 22-250 for varmits, 30-06 for deer, .17hmr for small varmits I don't want to eat.

And don't ferggit Dennis, 12ga. double ought with a dime chaser for unwanted 2 legged vermints!!! ;D
I like that caliber Wayawatsi.

I was just about to make this point myself. I love the 7.62x39 for Hog in thick brush but in the open I like the 300 win mag. As far as carry pistols I will always be a 1911 fan but with the recoil I find my wife does better with a 40 call.

Best all around hunting catridge for mid to small game I think is the 12 ga but you limited on range.

Cheapest round for the buck is probably 7.62x54 Russian for someone getting into the sport of hunting. Cheap ammo and it was made to last.

Close quarters combat 9mm out of a HK MP5. Long rang 50 cal out of a Barrett light 50 model M88.

Best all around modern combat cartridge 7,62x39 largly due to the primary weapon that it is fired out of now adays.

The list goes on and on and on .......

This is the Russian Made 308 basically,I have to say I love my 7mm Mag,It traveled 4000 miles with out shooting it,went through some of the Roughest terrain me and rich had ever 4X4 rd,I had him pull over run a piece of paper out about 60 yards or so just to see if it's zero had held true after all of these mile of bumpy driving, and you couldn't have hit a more centered part of the paper,I would have thought for sure the Bushnell 3X9X40 would of been off a tad,but I didn't even bother with another shot,Then,I like the 308 Cal,have one of those and I have the Moisen Nontan 7.62X56 I think it is..could be 54 but thats the Russian 308 basically and I like that to,with out the scope thank you, with 20-15 vision the scope isn't all ways what I want to be looking through,I may have my 308 set up with some nice sites also this year.

I pretty well like all calibers cause I figure there's a need for each one...BUT.....I have always said that if I had to only own one rifle and use it for everything from varmints to big game and everything else...it would be a 25-06....I've own one for years...got my first one in the 60's when they were still a wild cat....I always liked how flat they could shoot and reach out and touch something and also their accuracy...most of them always shot the 87 grain bullets really good and also the 115 grains...but...like I said...I like em all........Sasakwa
If the same question was asked about pistols...I would have to say the 44 magnum...Only because I don't own anything bigger, but maybe someday.......
